Job submission: CONDOR

Some instruction on how to submit a job using condor in the IfP at Edinburgh can be found in the Edinburgh ILC wiki.
Log on EASE is required.

Testbeam!

I'm at DESY for LCFI's testbeam. We are firing 6 GeV electrons at five layers of ISIS detectors. Not very exciting, the system is quite simple, so there's not that much to go wrong, but a very useful exercise none-the-less. Here's a few photos:

CERN libraries at ECDF

I compiled and installed the CERN libraries at ECDF. Nothing special here, the instructions from Harold Vogt CERNLIB 2005 (64 bit). They are located at /export/work/ppe/ilc/cern/cernlib/2005/lib. More details on the process are found on my ilc-wiki-page.

In addition to the CERN libraries, I have also installed GSL v.18, CLHEP 2.0.3.1 and (ROOT).

ECDF and the ILC software

In my role of one of the ecdf(*)-beta-tester, I have been trying to install the necessary components for the ILC software. Remember that the ECDF is the Edinburgh Computing and Data Facility) and it is a valuable computing resource for our group. It is their policy that group specific software should be installed under /exports/work/ppe. I have created there three main directories: ilc, lhcb, sw. The first two are self explanatory: they are the place to put all experiment related software. In addition sw could be seen as the generic and common software container, for instance Root. The machines at ECDF run Scientific Linux 4 and the architecture is 64-bits. We should agree what software is needed for us to run ILC studies and analyses.

LCWS 2007

I'm just back from LCWS 2007, the Linear Collider Workshop on physics and detectors for the ILC. It ran concurrently to ILC 2007, the Global Design Effort meeting working on the design of the accelerator itself.

To my mind, the two major developments at the workshop were:

1. The detector concepts are being encourage to work to the same timeline as the design for the machine. Letters of intent for the detector should be prepared by Summer 2008. These should then be followed by "engineering design report" by roughly the end of 2009.

2. Two of the detector concept groups, LDC and GLD, have decided to work together and produce a joint letter of intent. The detectors concepts were already very similar: both had a gaseous tracker and a energy flow calorimeter. Therefore there are now only three detector concepts: LDC/GLD, SiD and the 4th concept.

I think it's important to commit to working with one (or more) of the detector concept collaborations soon!

Welcome

Victoria and I, welcome you to the Edinburgh ILC (International Lineal Collider) blog. We want this to be a place to share our experiences on the development of the ILC. Please let us know if you want to be part of this blog.
